The Space Between

Harmonising Yin and Yang

One of my greatest inspirations in Chinese metaphysics is Claude Larre(1919-2001), a French Jesuit priest, sinologist and prominent scholar of Classical Chinese medicine.  He was highly regarded for his translations and interpretations of Chinese medicine and philosophy.

Père Larre had a deep understanding of Chinese metaphysics and its integration with health practices. He believed in the integration of body, mind, and spirit, which resonates with core ideas of Chinese medicine. His work extends beyond medicine, encompassing a deep appreciation for how ancient Chinese philosophy could be applied to modern life, and offers a profound blend of philosophy, linguistics, and medicine.

His writing focuses on the importance of harmony during this transitional Late Summer season.

Late Summer is needed to give space for the body and mind to process and integrate the energy and experiences of the summer. Père Larre saw the unique importance of Late Summer season as essential for maintaining balance within the cyclical transitions of the year. The need for this “extra” season arises from the principle of harmony and continuity in Five Element theory.

In the Five Elements, balance is a central concept. Late Summer is essential for harmonising the fluctuations between Yin and Yang. Without this intermediary phase, between seasons could disturbances.  Without this transitional phase, the sudden shift from Yang to Yin create lead to emotional or physical imbalances.

Late Summer Balance

Late Summer is essential for emotional and physical health. Becoming aware of the nature of seasonal phases can smooth a harmonious transition as we shift from outward activity to inward reflection. This is a season of nurture and reflection and a centering force in the year.

This time of  integration is a good time to reflect on how we nurture ourselves and others? How do we find a grounded, centered connection to the inner self, as well as toward the community and our relationships? It is a good time for self care and nourishment . These ignite feelings of empathy, compassion, and contentment. These feelings of stability and centeredness might bring you balance and a sense of internal peace throughout the season.
