What is Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year (also known as Spring Festival) is observed in China, across East Asia and in many parts of the world with large Asian communities. The Lunar New Year usually falls between January 21 and February 20, depending on the lunar calendar.

Lunar New Year celebrations include traditional customs and festivities, family reunions, elaborate feasts, dragon/lion dances, fireworks, and red envelopes (ang pow) exchanged for good luck.

Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Indonesia celebrate the Lunar New Year on a large scale. In cities around the world, Asian communities come together to celebrate the Spring Festival with events, cultural performances, and traditional rituals.

Lunar New Year is a time of joy, reflection, and hope for the future. The festivities can last 15 days, encompassing the period from the new moon on New Year's Day until the full moon on the Lantern Festival.

Why Wood Dragon Year?

In Chinese astrology, 12 animals represent the zodiac - Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit/Cat, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram/Goat/Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. These animals are associated with the lunar calendar, with each animal sign repeating every 12 years. The order of the animals was determined by a mythical race in which they competed, and their positions were assigned based on the order in which they finished.

Each animal has distinct characteristics and qualities that influence personality traits and destiny of those born in that animal year. These characteristics are further influenced by the associated element, as each animal is intricately linked with one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

The five elements rotate in order—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. These elements follow a cyclical sequence, in the order of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The five elements interact with the animals in a cyclical manner.

The Year of the Dragon happens every 12 years, and rotates through the five elements. A Wood Dragon year is followed by a Fire Dragon year, then an Earth Dragon year, etc. The sequence repeats every 60 years. Each combination of animal and element is believed to influence the characteristics and energy of the year. For example, a Wood Rat and a Water Rat would have different characteristics due to the influence of the element.

Chinese astrology is used for many reasons, including matchmaking, predicting compatibility, and offering guidance on auspicious/inauspicious times for activities. The belief in the influence of these animal signs is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, and many people consult their signs for guidance on life decisions, relationships, and career choices. The cyclical nature and the incorporation of elements add layers of complexity and depth to the interpretations, making it a fascinating and enduring aspect of Chinese traditional wisdom.
